In the middle of 2019, ACROLife delivered a circus-focused training program with twenty 15-year-olds at Galson Grammer School that integrated personal and social development.
Below is the narrative that we undertook to direct the training.
The most underestimated and overlooked contribution to the success of a circus performance is the connection that the performers share with each other.
That capacity to listen closely to each other’s nonverbal and verbal communication, to problem solve effectively together, to be intensely creative and adventurous, to trust and support beyond measure, is what creates the difference between an audience being superficially, momentarily impressed and an audience being blown away by the power and strength of our humanity.
These are skills intrinsically built into the mechanics of how we train circus, but in acroyoga, we specifically target the development and awareness of these skills to maximize the potential of what they can offer to a performance.
These personal and social development skills are not only essential in creating a show that engages and moves an audience; but essential for success in all areas of life.
Negotiating relationships and working with others is the cornerstone of a happy successful life.
Without the ability to listen to yourself, to others, to problem-solve together, to be creative, to trust and support yourself and each other – life becomes very difficult.
Think about an average day for a moment – from when you wake up to when you go to sleep, think of all the interactions that you have with different people during the day.
It is the quality of these interactions and how we manage them that determines our mood, how happy we feel and ultimately the overall sense of “ success” of our day.
Humans are neurologically wired for social interaction, so we may as well learn how to be good at it!
And what better way, than the universe of acroyoga.
